First edition, 12mo, [4], xii, 128, [16]pp., LACKING the 3 folding plates of engravers' marks and monograms, cont. calf, rubbed, re-backed with inner hinges strengthened. A preface of 12 pages which is a brief history of engraving is followed by 128 pages of names arranged in two series, the first being numbers 1 (Martin Schoen) to 639 (J. Dieu de S. Jean), foreign engravers, the second being numbers 640 (Thomas Geminie or Geminus) to 805 (James Green), English engravers. Bigmore & Wyman I, p.135; Levis, p.51-2.

Collated, complete.ESTC citation number T153275.Martyn's concise study into the history of engraving, tracing the art from its beginnings up to the commencement of the eighteenth century.The work details all of the famous engravers from the last few centuries, accompanied with brief biographies detailing their works.It is generally considered that the botanist Thomas Martyn compiled this work.Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper, 'Bought June 1891, Written by Thomas Martyn&apos. Label to the front pastedown. Blind stamp of the Wigan Free Public Library to the title page and to the folding plates. Numerical ink to the reverse of the title page. In a full calf binding, rebacked with the original boards restored. Externally, generally smart, with some light discolouration to the boards. A little wear to the extremities, with evidence of former loss to the boards before being rebacked. Light marks to the boards and spine. Label to the front pastedown. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean with just a couple of odd spots. MARTYN, Thomas. THIRTY-EIGHT PLATES WITH EXPLANATIONS intended to illustrate Linnaeus' System of Vegetables, and particularly adapted to the Letters on the Elements of Botany. London: B. White and Son, 1788. First edition. Octavo. vi, 72 pp. + XXXVIII ff. Published after requests by some readers for illustrations to Martyn's Letters on the Elements of Botany (1785, Pritzel 5927). The 38 copper plates, drawn and engraved by F. P. Nodder, are beautifully hand-colored. Martyn mentions Nodder in his Advertisement (pp.iii-iv), and gave him a place on the title-page of later editions (1799 and 1817). Thomas Martyn, like his father before him, was Professor of Botany at Cambridge, holding the position for 63 years. Light spot to Plate XXIII, otherwise internally fine, in very worn leather-backed boards with detached front cover. (Pritzel 5928; Nissen 1292). Ill.: Nodder, F.P.

Good.. … and particularly adapted to the Letters on the Elements of Botany [addressed to a Lady by the celebrated Jean Jacques Rousseau]. Third edition. Plates drawn and engraved by Fred. P. Nodder. In this copy the plates are hand-coloured (some copies have plates uncoloured). The plates mainly offer segments of corollas, but a few, show a touch of art. Thomas Martyn (1735-1825), professor of botany at the University of Cambridge, believed this volume of plates would bring an understanding of the Linnean system to a popular audience.
